Discover one of the oldest cities of Friesland, Workum. Today the city is known for the Jopie Huisman Museum.

The city

Workum is one of the eleven Frisian cities and is located in the Southwest of Friesland. Workum obtained city rights in 1939 and belongs to the eleven Frisian cities.
A dug waterway, Wymerts, connected the port with the inland lakes in Friesland.

Attractions in Workum

The Deep Dolte splits Workum into two parts and connects the Zandmeer to the IJsselmeer. In this town you can also find the Merk, a square with some beautiful buildings. The former town hall can be found here for example. Since the municipal reorganization it has no function anymore. Discover the href=”http://www.warkumserfskip.nl/” Museum Warkums Erfskip and the St. Gertrude Church. The latter has a freestanding tower and right in front of it is a bronze statue of Uffing. Uffing is a famous monk from this town. Over the river the Diepe Dolte you will find some bridges. Near one of the bridges is a sluice worthwhile visiting. Workum is also known for its pottery. Near the sluice in Workum you will find the Jewish Cemetery dating from 1664.

Activities in Workum

When you go to Workum you surely have to visit the Jopie Huisman Museum. Works of the painter Jopie Huisman are exhibited in this museum. It is also possible to take a bicycle tour of 25 kilometers around the place to see the places in his works that were very important to him. It is very nice to have a stroll through the old centre of Workum. You will find here namely some magnificent monuments and gables. Nature is well worth the effort too by the way. You can make beautiful hikes and bike rides through the countryside surrounding the city. Also enjoy the surrounding villages and hamlets and of course the IJsselmeer. Here you can also take a sailing trip or explore the area by canoe or motorboat.

Spending the night in Workum

To get to know Workum and its surroundings really well, it would be best to stay over for several nights. Of course it is also possible to spend your vacation near Workum. Enjoy the watersport activities during your stay! Book a night at Hotel Wymerts or De Gulden Leeuw. There are many more hotels and B& B’s to discover and their rating usually is very good. It is very well possible to spend the night at the waterfront. In the area of Workum you will find several campsites and holiday parks at the waterfront. Directly from your tent, caravan or motorhome as you splash jump into the IJsselmeer. Are you spending the night in Workum?

Events in Workum

During the autumn holidays you can see the `Fishing Days` which are organized at that time. Another annual event is the so called ´shit race`. This sailing competition is held since 1974.
The sailors start in Workum and have to sail over the IJsselmeer to the Bulb region and back.
The sailing competition thanks its name to the historic waterway where the manure from the Frisian farmers was transported to the Dutch farmlands.
In September the annual cattle inspection takes place, often combined with a gondola parade.
