A journey into the dark

| Wendy Bosma-Timmer

Discover Friesland’s nocturnal magic

Light pollution is all around us. It dims the night’s wonder and makes us forget how breathtaking a true starry sky can be. Luckily, Friesland has the lowest light pollution in the Netherlands. We invite you to fall in love with the dark again. In places like the Boschplaat on Terschelling or the Lauwersmeer area, you can still lose yourself in a sea of stars. Here, the night is celebrated — just as it should be.

What is light pollution?

Light pollution is caused by artificial lighting that disrupts natural darkness — from street lamps and illuminated buildings to billboard lights. It prevents the night from ever being truly dark. And that’s not just a shame for stargazers — it’s also harmful to animals and even to our own sleep. Did you know that over 80% of people worldwide can no longer see the Milky Way from their homes?

Where can you see the stars in Friesland?

Friesland is the perfect place to experience true darkness. Here are some of the best locations for stargazing.

Dark Sky Park Terschelling

On Terschelling, especially in the nature reserve De Boschplaat, time seems to stand still. With no artificial light in sight, you can see the Milky Way with your own eyes. In summer, it feels as if someone has spilled a sack full of stars across the sky. And if you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights in winter.

Dark Sky Park Lauwersmeer

On the border between Groningen and Friesland lies Lauwersmeer National Park — officially recognised as a Dark Sky Park, and for good reason. It’s so dark here, you’ll feel like you could almost reach out and touch the stars. Regular stargazing evenings are held, giving you the chance to learn more about the wonders unfolding above your head.

Why does it matter?

Dark nights aren’t just beautiful — they’re essential. Many animals rely on true darkness to survive, and we humans also feel the calming, restorative power of a night without artificial light. Friesland is actively working to protect these rare dark places, so that everyone can continue to enjoy them in the future.

Tips for the best stargazing experience

  1. Check the moon phase: A moonless night gives the clearest view of the stars

  2. Dress warmly: Comfort makes the night more enjoyable

  3. Bring a red-light flashlight: It preserves your night vision

  4. Use a star map or app: To know what’s lighting up the sky above you

  5. Take a thermos: Hot chocolate makes everything better
