Schiermonnikoog is one of the smaller islands in the Frisian Wadden Island chain. However, there is plenty to do with over 30 kilometres of bike paths and mile-long beaches. Explore the two historic lighthouses and the marina on the south side of the island.

National Park
The nature on Schiermonnikoog is amazing. And just as special is that Schiermonnikoog is one of the four national parks of Friesland. Almost nowhere else will you find so many varied landscapes next to each other in such a small area. The island has forests, beaches, dunes with lovely flowers, mudflats and polders. Knowing this, it should be no surprise that Schiermonnikoog has been one of the 20 national parks in the Netherlands since 1989.

SPORTS PARADISE
Schiermonnikoog is a real sports paradise. You can enjoy blokarting, traction kiting, beach golf and archery on the beach. It’s also the perfect location for a relaxing yoga session in order to clear your head. The island also offers the opportunity for mudflat hiking, horseback riding, swimming, tennis, cycling and walking. There are several nice walking routes across the island and November Walking Month is an annual event on Schiermonnikoog.

Not to be missed
You definitely have to visit the lighthouses when on Schiermonnikoog. There are two, one white and one red. Only the red one, the Noordertoren, still operates 24 hours a day. In the past, the skippers knew that they could sail between the banks of the Wadden Sea and the North Sea when the lights of both lighthouses converged.
