Take a look

The Koningsdiep river winds its way between the villages of Akkrum and Bakkeveen in Southeast Friesland. This stretch of water is also known as De Boarn and It Alddjip.

At one time it flowed into the former Middelzee estuary. Over the centuries the river left its mark on the surrounding landscape, which varies from meadows and marshes to heathland and forests.

Farming villages and luxurious country estates such as those near the villages of Beetsterzwaag and Bakkeveen were built on the sand ridges along the banks of the old river. Peat masters made a decent living selling turf as fuel. This caused discontent among the poor workers who cut the peat from the river valley and led to the rise of socialism in Friesland.

With its rich heritage of beautiful and well preserved natural and man-made landscapes, this region is definitely worth visiting.

The Turfroute boating route runs through the valley around the river.

Koningspad XL is a beautiful several-day walk along the banks of the Koningsdiep river. View the sections of the walk here.
