The location is perfect if you are looking for peace and space. If you have your own boat, you can easily moor it in the harbor and sail within a minute on the Fluessen, one of the Frisian lakes. This location is also suitable for cycling trips, along the banks you can easily cycle to Woudsend. Or you leave the water and cycle in the direction of Balk and Gaasterland.

O, zo vervelend als je net op de fiets zit: een stortbui. Een extreme plensbui van meer dan 60 mm per etmaal is bovendien best zorgelijk. De waterbeheerders liggen er wel eens wakker van. Hoe moeten de Friese gemalen zoveel water in korte tijd afvoeren? En hoe moet dat in de toekomst, nu zware buien door klimaatverandering steeds vaker voorkomen?
De Heining, dit gemaal dat opvallend genoeg ín de dijk is gebouwd, helpt daarbij. Dat gebeurt alleen als het waterpeil in de Friese boezem, dat is het aan elkaar verbonden stelsel van vaarten en meren, te hoog staat. Deze vijzels kunnen dan 250 kubieke meter water per minuut naar zee pompen.
Het is een mooie assistentie voor de gemalen aan het IJsselmeer, maar de capaciteit is ook weer niet overweldigend als je vergelijkt met die gemalen in Lemmer en Stavoren, en zelfs niet met de gemalen Zwarte Haan en Roptazijl, die de polders hier verderop aan de kust drooghouden.
De Heining is dan ook onderdeel van een groter plan. Het is een uiting van een nieuwe manier van denken over waterbeheersing, een interne 'klimaatverandering' zou je kunnen zeggen. Meer meebewegen mét de natuur en het water in plaats van tegen de natuur en het water strijden. Dat is best spannend, want we hebben duizend jaar dijken gebouwd om ons tegen het geweld van de zee te beschermen.
En hoe doe je dat dan, anders naar waterbeheersing kijken? Door ruimte te maken voor extra waterberging in het binnenland bijvoorbeeld, zoals je hier kunt zien aan de brede vaarten, die natuurvriendelijke oevers hebben gekregen. En doordat het zeewater vrij spel heeft in een kweldergebied hoogt deze vanzelf door slib op. Over een paar jaar ontstaat hier dan al een natuurlijke buffer tegen de stijgende zeespiegel, als een golfbreker voor de dijk.
Het gemaal is ook een verbinding tussen zoet en zout water. Dit is goed voor trekvissen die 24 uur per dag door het gemaal kunnen zwemmen, maar ook voor kwelderplanten en wadvogels in het unieke buitendijkse kwelderlandschap.

Samen met de andere leden van kunstenaarscollectief Observatorium werkt Ruud Reutelingsperger al jaren aan kunst in de openbare ruimte. Hierbij richt het collectief zich op het veranderende landschap en hoe het de nieuwsgierigheid kan prikkelen naar de wereld om ons heen.Ruud en zijn collega’s kennen Joop Mulder al sinds jaar en dag. “Joop en wij delen dezelfde passie; het landschap en de verhalen van mensen. We maakten wilde plannen, spraken bijzondere mensen en vooral van het buitendijkse gebied werden we lyrisch; kwelders en dobben die wij nog niet kenden. Hoe mooi zou het zijn als de mensen weer zelf land kunnen gaan maken, als bewoners hun relatie met het buitendijkse zelf nieuw leven in kunnen blazen en in samenwerking met kunstenaars ook de taal van de verbeelding gaan spreken; riepen wij hardop tegen de wind in naar elkaar.” Deze dynamische samenwerking leidde tot een drietal concrete projectvoorstellen; Terp van de Takomst, De Kromme Horne en de Golf van Termunterzijl. “Samen met Joop predikten we de slogan; Eerst geloven, dan zien.”
