Leeuwarden's Pride, Historical View
One of Leeuwarden's most popular, also most famous landmarks is the Oldehove, aka the Dutch Tower of Pisa. When the monumental attraction is described in a simple way, it is called "The Leaning Tower". That's where the restaurant's name comes from. Translated into Frisian, "De Skeve Toren".
The Oldehove is a freestanding church tower, the national monument has a history for which it goes back in time to the year 1000. There was a small church at that time, which was enlarged in 1100. During the period from 1435 to 1576, a three-nave St Vitus church stood there. In 1529, it was commissioned to build a wide tower to make it possible to build a tall tower. When the tower was only ten metres high, it already began to sag.
In September 1576, the church collapsed as a result of a storm. In 1595, the church building was demolished and only the freestanding tower hull remained. The church building was completely demolished in 1706. Now the church tower the Oldehove is open to the public to experience a beautiful view of Leeuwarden.
