The village of Wommels has a rich history in the field of butter-but even more so in the cheese trade. The many still clearly recognisable cheese merchant houses in Wommels are a reminder of that time, which lasted from ca. 1880 to 1910.

Museum it Tsiispakhûs is located in the cheese warehouse. In this museum the exhibition     during the year 2020 is titled: “Farmer looks for...dairy factory” , next to the permanent exhibition to visit.

In the first mentioned exhibition, set up around a large historical tile tableau, it is told when the many dairies came into being, why, where and who worked there.

Historical objects, black-and-white photographs and film images illustrate the rise. Also

the disappearing place of the farmer’s wife is highlighted. And who were the founders and owners of the dairy factory? With the dairy the milk churn appeared, which had to transported from the farm to the factory and back by the ‘new’milkdriver or milk boatman.

In the museum cheese, especially Edam brand (made of plastic) are maturing and our unique model butter factory, powered by a steam engine from 1910, is in operation. From the almost life-size puzzle cow her internal organs can be extracted, so that it becomes visible how milk is formed from grass and the like.

If you come with a group a free introduction/tour of the museum is possible. An arrangement, consisting of a reception with coffee or tea and something tasty at a modern robotic dairy farm in the village of Oosterend, an explanation and guided tour of the farmer’s wife before or after the museum visit, is also a possibility.

This former cheese warehouse also lends itself well to an excursion, a family gathering or another gathering
