The wooden bell tower in the village of Ouwster-Nijega has been there since at least 1735. The bell beneath its four-sided dome roof was cast in 1340. At one time Ouwster-Nijega had its own church. The church did not have a tower and was demolished sometime during the first half of the 18th century. The prominent raised graveyard, heavily surrounded by trees and shrubs, like an island in an expansive landscape, is a reminder that a church once stood here.
