Near Dokkum, lies the village of Oostrum. On a partially excavated mound you will find this pretty little church with a remarkably low tower. In fact, the 13th century tower is much older than the church itself, which probably dates from the 16th century.
The tower also boasts an old clock bearing images of eight holy women and a Latin verse.
The windows of St. Nicholas Church clearly indicate a Gothic architectural style. During a restoration in 1973, parts of the original murals reappeared. They are depictions of churches, including the Dokkum abbey tower. Both the other two painted churches have a tower with a high stiletto spire; they may have been those of Kollum, Hantum or Wetsens.
Today, services are still held in the little church, then now owned by the Alde Fryske Tsjerken Foundation.
