In 1946 the municipality of Wymbritseradiel appointed a committee to realize a war memorial to commemorate the fallen of the Second World War and to keep the liberation alive.

It resulted in this column on which a rooster stands in a fighting position as a symbol of 'the urge for freedom' of the Dutch people and their willingness to defend that freedom at any price.

On September 5, 1951, the memorial was unveiled by the Queen's Commissioner Mr. H.P. Linthorst Homan. Due to the doubling of Rijksweg 43/A7 and a new viaduct, the column was moved to its current location in 1972. Since its unveiling, a memorial service has been held at the war memorial every year on May 4.
