The monumental building Harinxmastate is in the Frisian village of Beetsterzwaag. With a characteristic appearance, neo-classical style, and an English landscape garden, this building is one of the most beautiful buildings in Friesland.
But what makes this characteristic country house so special? Is this due to the impressive and unique appearance? Or is this due to the sad history? Originally this building was in Drachten. However, Maurits Pico Diederik, baron van Harinxma thoe Slooten, had demolished this building due to an accidental event. Since 1843, de Grietman van Smallingerland rebuilt Harinxmastate in the picturesque village of Beetsterzwaag, entirely in neoclassical style. In 1845 an English landscape garden was built near the country house. Furthermore, the fairy-tale mansion was enlarged by Herman Willem Stoett in 1877. During the expansion, the architect in Leeuwarden expanded the north side. In 1927 the front of the building was renovated by architect Willem Gerritsen in Arnhem.
Harinxmastate has a rich collection of family portraits. Today this country house is owned by Kyra Livia baroness of Harinxma thoe Slooten and is inhabited by the family of the first owner.
