Take a look

Freulevijver Pond can be found in the Oude Bos forest between the villages of Wijnjewoude and Bakkeveen.

From Finne 5 in Wijnjewoude, walk left along Jan-Anne Leane to get to the pond.

The Oude Bos forest was planted around 1880 by the Lycklama à Nijeholt family, which was among the Frisian nobility. The forest was managed as a production forest and also served as private park for the family.

A breach in the dike along the small Koningsdiep river, which flows a few hundred meters north of here, led to the creation of Freulevijver pond. Noblewoman Eritia Lycklama à Nijeholt had the pond enlarged around 1900. A domed summer house and boathouse were built on the bank so there could be picnics and sailing.

The little domed summer house and boathouse have long since disappeared. Today all that remains is a more or less natural gazebo where the summer house once stood. This is still a gorgeous spot for a picnic.
