Blaugerzen is a grassland area north of the town of Joure. These grasslands are part of the Lage Midden or ‘low midlands’ area of Friesland.   The fen meadow reserve near the village of Akmarijp is the largest in the Netherlands. Blaugerzen is a fine example of nutrient-poor grassland with an abundance of flowers. The grasses in these wet hay meadows include carnation sedge, purple moor grass and heath grass. The area is also home to water birds such as geese and waders such as lapwings and golden plovers. Many species of meadow birds once nested on the extensive fen meadows. When the weather is cold enough for ice, the area is popular for skating. Local attractions include the Ooievaarsdorp De Graverij stork sanctuary near the village of Akmarijp.
