Take a look

Makkum is a seaside resort on the IJsselmeer coast in Southwest Friesland, just south of the Afsluitdijk.

In the past, Makkum was located along the Zuiderzee, and the village's inhabitants relied on fishing and the lime industry.

With the construction of the Afsluitdijk in 1932, the IJsselmeer was created, effectively cutting off the village from the sea. This led to a decline in fishing, but tourism became a new source of income for the people of Makkum. Nowadays, the village boasts a pleasant boulevard with a large sandy beach, making it an ideal location for those wanting to learn (kite)surfing.

In the old center of the village, you can catch a glimpse of the time when Makkum was a bustling trading hub. There is, among other things, an old weigh house to visit and various stately merchant houses along the canal.

Due to the lively lime industry in the village, a significant amount of pottery was produced. Today, there is still one active Makkum pottery factory: the Royal Tichelaar. This oldest ceramic company in the Netherlands dates back to 1572.

Presently, the largest industry in Makkum is yacht building. The village constructs the most luxurious superyachts for clients worldwide!
