At the corner of Dubelestreek and Brêgebuorren in Dronryp stands the white birthplace and the statue of the famous painter Lourens Alma Tadema, also known as Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema.
Alma Tadema was born in 1836 as the son of a notary. He received his education as a visual artist in Antwerp. In 1870, he established himself as an artist in London, where he changed his first name from Lourens to Lawrence. In England, he is considered one of the most important painters.
He primarily painted classical scenes, often depicting wealthy aristocrats in his work. Besides being a painter, he was also a businessman, a lover of music, theater, and mechanical toys.
Alma Tadema spoke English, German, French, Dutch, and Italian. He had famous friends such as the writer Oscar Wilde and Tchaikovsky. Lawrence Alma-Tadema has left behind a rich body of work, part of which can be viewed in the Fries Museum.
