The Polder Cornwerd (in Frisian Koarnwert) nature reserve is an area of reclaimed land that provides excellent habitat for meadow birds.

The nature here is unusual because the meadows are fertilised with farmyard manure that is rich in straw. This creates ideal conditions for buttercups, cuckoo flowers and sorrel and attracts insects that provide food for meadow birds such as oystercatchers, lapwings, black-tailed godwits, redshank and skylarks. The traditional smock mill at Cornwerd has been restored to working order, so if the conditions are right you may get to see the sails turning!
