Take a look
Along the IJsselmeer coast, near Workum, nature reserve the Workumerwaard is situated. This sandbank was flooded by the tidal movement when the IJsselmeer was still Zuiderzee.
After the construction of the Afsluitdijk, the salt-water nature changed: the water became fresh. Nowadays the Workumerwaard consists of two parts: the Warkumerbinnenwaard and the Warkumerbûtenwaard. It is a particularly rich bird area. The Warkumerbûtenwaard is still influenced by the IJsselmeer water. On the shell banks, for example, large groups of black-headed gulls and common terns nest. You can spot birds very well at various bird lookouts and enjoy the vastness and nature.
