From Chalkboard Master to Hobby Painter

Gerrit is now a hobby painter, but he previously worked in education. Throughout those years, he never pursued his other talent seriously, but he did draw: Christmas, Sinterklaas, birthdays, or Halloween – all great occasions for a pastel drawing on the blackboard! But he always said: When I retire, I will start painting. With oil paint – that was something he knew for sure.

Four Seasons, Many Colors

For the exhibition at Museum Sloten, Gerrit presents a “seasonal circle” depicting the beauty of the Frisian landscape in all four seasons. A striking feature of many paintings of the Frisian landscape is how well the sense of space is captured: the vast meadows, the spectacular skies above the low (sometimes very low) horizon. That is, of course, no coincidence. Someone living in Switzerland paints mountains, someone in North Holland paints the beach and the sea – and here, you always end up with that low horizon, because you want to showcase the wide-open space. If you stand on the Wadden dike, you see the vastness of the Wadden Sea; at Spannenburg, you see the openness of the fields and meadows. Fortunately, we can still look far into the distance and enjoy everything around us. And hopefully, Gerrit will continue to find great joy in painting these landscapes for a long time to come.
