Take a look

Do you want to know why the Oldehove is leaning so far? What the Dutch master painter Rembrandt has to do with Leeuwarden? Or why the city is renown for its relationship with the Dutch royal family? The exhibition Verhalen van Leeuwarden (Stories of Leeuwarden) gives you the answer to this question and many more!

The permanent exhibition Stories of Leeuwarden has recently been renewed and expanded. Objects, archive documents and paintings, especially from the collections of HCL and the Fries Museum, provide a picture of more than 1000 years of history of Leeuwarden and surrounding villages. On the basis of ten themes, you're taken into the rich history of Leeuwarden and its villages. From the earliest tracks and Leeuwarden as a small settlement on three mounds through the time of the Eighty Years' War, the Golden and Silver Ages to the development of Leeuwarden as a modern city surrounded by villages. There is also an experience that looks back on Leeuwarden-Fryslân European Capital of Culture 2018.
