Folk cuisine: Iran
Leeuwarden
Did you know that not everywhere the new year starts on 1 January? In Iran, the start of spring - around 21 March - also marks the beginning of a new year and we are celebrating it with you!
Take a look
On 29 March, our Iranian hosts, Maryam and Akram, are inviting you to the table at Podium Explore. They will take you on a pleasant journey through the rich traditions of the Iranian New Year. Enjoy authentic Iranian food, listen to ancient poetry and get carried away by music and dance.
Akram and Maryam will also share their personal stories and give you a unique insight into their culture, so sit down, taste, listen and celebrate!
Fun fact: the Iranian New Year celebration is called Nowruz, where a ceremonial table is set with a number of fixed elements: like an apple, a mirror and a goldfish. Each element stands for something. For instance, coins are laid out for prosperity and wealth, a basket of painted eggs for fertility, an apple (the earth) in a bowl of water (the universe), a goldfish in a bowl as a symbol of life. This table can also be found in Podium Explore on Saturday.
