Take a look
From Odessa to New York, from Klezmer to Jazz.
In Yiddish Jazz, Mirjam van Dam takes you to the Jewish shtetls (towns) in pre-war old Europe, and then crosses by boat to New York. From Odessa to the Lower Eastside where Jewish music turned into Jazz and Yiddish theater turned into Hollywood entertainment! Jewish composers and lyricists, completely against the rules, collaborated with African-American jazz musicians. This makes Yiddish Jazz an unexpectedly beautiful outcome of a violent history, and especially in this day and age a shining example of cooperation and creativity.
The band consists of: Mirjam van Dam - vocals/percussion and narration Niels Tausk - bass and trumpet Ed Boekee - piano Peter Peuker - saxophone and clarinet
Mirjam van Dam and band play wonderful nostalgic music, swinging and with a Jewish soul: with neshome.
