Every year the 'Vijf Mei Speech' is given in the Dorpskerk Huizum by a prominent Dutch person. This year by the vice-president of the Council of State, Mr Th.C. (Thom) de Graaf, in that role also known as the 'viceroy'.
As a D66 politician he has held various positions in public administration, including in the House of Representatives and the Senate.
In both Houses he was also party leader. In the second Balkenende cabinet he was not only deputy prime minister but also Minister of Administrative Renewal. From 8 January 2007 to 1 February 2012, De Graaf was mayor of Nijmegen. Since 1 November 2018, he has been vice-president of the Council of State.
