Antiquity festival at Tresoar

Leeuwarden

As part of the Classics Week, we are organising an Antiquity Festival with guided tours and two lectures, one of which is especially for children.

Take a look

During the last weekend of the Classics Week, Tresoar is organising the Antiquity Festival for young and old. On Sunday afternoon 16 March, various activities will take place, such as a lecture, children's lecture and a tour of special collections of Tresoar (including the Buma Library and the Academy of Franeker).

Afûk will also be present with a book sale and the new comic book about The Romans. The uprising of the Frisians (Frisian and Dutch version) should of course not be missed! You can also taste real Roman snacks such as bread and meatballs.

Children's lecture Lucas Knitel: Riots and unrest in the Roman Empire

Thanks to their strong armies, powerful emperors, excellent roads and impressive buildings, you might think that the Romans had everything in perfect order. But even in the Roman Empire you had thieves, murderers and even hooligans. Were there also police officers, courts and prisons? In this lecture, historian Lucas Knitel tells you about crime and punishment in the Roman Empire. Special attention is paid to the riots in Roman cities such as Constantinople, Pompeii and Rome, which could sometimes last for days and caused enormous damage. Why did such riots break out? Who took to the streets? Who restored order? And if you could use a time machine to transport someone from the Roman Empire to 2025, would they be surprised about football fans tearing down a stadium? You will hear the answer in this lecture.

Discover the archaeological collections of Tresoar

Tresoar has one of the most extensive (publicly accessible) collections of archaeological books in Western Europe: the Buma Collection. The collection consists of almost 60,000 titles about the time of the Greeks and Romans. This collection is important for the study of antiquity. What makes this collection so special? What is the oldest book of Tresoar? What has Tresoar preserved from the Academy of Franeker? You will get answers to all these questions during a tour of our depots.

Lecture Hugo Koning: Zeus, bringer of justice

When the cosmos had only just come into being and the oldest gods oversaw a world full of wild natural forces and terrifying monsters, there was no question of law and justice. It is only the third supreme god, Zeus, who, after his assumption of power, starts working on justice and creates the conditions for a society in which law is central. How does this wonderful transformation come about? Why does Zeus do this and the gods before him do not? What is needed to create a just world? And what does this yield for people? In this lecture we look at the oldest myths of Greece to find answers to these other questions - answers that are still relevant to us.
