Take a look
A walk through downtown along traces of famous and less famous Leeuwarder women.
How about Margaretha Geertruida Zelle (Mata Hari), Saskia van Uylenburgh, Maria Louise van Hessen-Kassel (Marijke Meu).
Leeuwarden has a rich history of women. When the city developed into the trading center of Friesland in the 16th century, women already had a clear role in it. Leeuwarden women were free-spirited women, who stood their ground as managers of inns, as women of pleasure, as market women, and as patrons in wealthier circles.
