Leeuwarden
The once ever-so-prestigious city language of the Frisian elite was later considered a city dialect with a low social status. How could this be possible?
Take a look
The book Het Friese ‘Nederduits’ (Frisian ‘Low German’) by linguists Reitze Jonkman and Arjen Versloot was recently published. Leewadders (Liwwadders), one of the variants of the Stadsfries language, is also discussed extensively in this book. The once ever-so-prestigious city language of the Frisian elite was later considered a city dialect with a low social status. What historical developments are the cause of this and what mutual linguistic influences of Low German from the 16th and 17th centuries and the Frisian of that time can be identified in the contemporary vocabulary of the city dialects and of Frisian? How this works will be explained during this lecture. The main languages are Stads, Frisian and Dutch
