Three centuries ago, Hindeloopen grew into a major trading city. The city had a large fleet of 100 ships that sailed across the ocean. Hindeloopen is still an attractive city to visit. Many old characteristic properties are preserved. The port and the structure of the city with its narrow streets are a tourist attraction.

In Museum Hindeloopen, the traces of the rich past of the former Zuiderzee town are exhibited on a tasteful way. In multiple rooms, the visitor gets acquainted with the Hindelooper costume, the Hindelooper painting and interiors. Also to the fisheries, the merchant and the former port is given extended attention in the Museum. A visit to Hindeloopen without a meeting with the glorious past, as presented in the Museum, is a missed opportunity. Off-season the museum is open by appointment for groups.
