Take a look

The Sudergemaal pumping station is on one of the waterways of the Turf Boating Route. It was built back in 1924 to drain the polders south of the village of Nij Beets and was one of the first electric pumping stations to be built in Friesland. The pumping station is still pretty much in its original condition.

Because of its cultural and historical value, the building has been declared a protected monument. Today the pumping station is primarily a museum and art gallery as part of the It Damshûs open air museum.

The museum is a bit further on at the edge of the village of Nij Beets. The exhibits cover all aspects of life during the peat-mining era, from a poor peat-maker's house to the peat master's house which also served as a shop and pub.

It is possible to moor at the pumping station and walk to the village of Nij Beets.
