The Groote Brekken (Frisian: de Grutte Brekken) is also known as Lemster Brekken. A special path provides partial access to the nature reserve, located in the polders near Lemmer. It is a wet area with extensive reed fields and marsh plants.
The Bird Watch built a special wall for bats and amphibians. Oystercatchers and kingfishers nest in the sand dunes. The observation tower provides a good view of bird migration. In winter, you'll find mainly wild ducks and geese. In spring, you can spot waders. Next to this lake is another one, the Brandemeer (Frisian: Brandemar). You can observe it best with a telescope.
