The Aekingerzand watchtower offers a panoramic view of much of the heath and drift-sand area near the village of Appelscha on the border between the provinces of Friesland and Drenthe.
Grenspoel lake at the edge of the sandy plain is a marsh lake that actually straddles the border.
The watchtower itself was built in 1995 by young people from Bijzonder Jeugdwerk Aekinga youth support organisation in Appelscha.
