Aunt Marijke was very loved by the inhabitants and the people of Friesland. The death of the princess, therefore, stirred up a lot in people and after her death, there was also a lot of interest. After her 70th birthday, Aunt Marijke's health becomes weaker. She suffered a minor stroke that caused her to lose control of her right hand. Despite her poor health, she continued her work as a regency. Because of her health, Tante Marijke had to work as a second regency with Hertog van Brunswijk, at which time he was appointed as guardian for the grandchildren of Aunt Marijke. Ultimately, Aunt Marijke died on Easter Sunday, she was 77 years old.

There was a lot of attention after the death of Aunt Marijke. Shortly after her funeral procession, a book was published containing an extensive description of her carriage and funeral procession. Caroline took over the task of regent from Aunt Marijke until grandson Willem V becomes an adult.
