Take a look
The Aeltsjemeerpolder is an area of peatland near the town of Workum that was reclaimed from a lake in 1877. The land here is three metres below the Amsterdam Ordnance Datum. This is clearly evident in the landscape with higher and lower land separated by dikes. From the N359, there is a road that leads through the area. The reclaimed peatland provides habitat for many meadow birds. The area also attracts several species of ducks and geese. Dandelions and sorrel thrive here. Near Workum you can see the part of the land that was once De Breewar island.
