Ferry-Cycling Tour Aldegeaster Breken

A brisk walking tour around the water of the beautiful Oudegaaster Breken, crossing the water on the way with a ferry.

Mini village
You start in the ancient mini village of Nijhuizum. Here you will find Friesland's smallest church, a simple building from 1721 without a connection to the electricity network, surrounded by an old cemetery. You cycle along the Nijhuizumervaart towards the ferry of the Renema family. Here you will be 'droech oer de feart' (droech oer de feart) at the indicated times, which means you will be put dry on the canal, for which you pay one euro.

In the middle of meadows
Cycle down the long Keapwei in the middle of the meadows towards Gaastmeer. In the 'front village' of Gaastmeer, Kleine Gaastmeer, turn left towards Oudega. Now you cycle on the Feandyk, a low-lying road that used to be regularly flooded. At the exit Idzega the Feandyk changes into the Tsjerkewei and after the exit Sandfirden you cycle straight towards the church of the water sports village Oudega SWF.

Coffee break
Oudega is perfect for a stop at the harbor, you can go to the local catering industry or Doarpswinkel for something delicious. Then cycle on towards Blauwhuis and after Swimplak de Aldegeaster Breken (with public toilet facilities) turn left onto the cycle path towards Doris Mooltsje, the black spider-head mill from 1780. From this point you have a magnificent view over the water.

Bird mecca
Continue cycling with Oudegaaster Breken on your left and De Ryp nature reserve on your right. Many birds can be seen here! In autumn and winter it is a cacophony of geese and in spring you can see meadow birds such as black-tailed godwits, lapwings and oystercatchers.

The finish
When you finally reach the road again after passing the Mûntsebuorsterpolder, turn left. You cycle past a few farms and the Nijhuizumer mill. Here is another resting point in the form of a tea garden. After a few hundred meters you will return to the center of Nijhuizum and your bike ride is over.

Center Workum
The eleven-town town of Workum is just around the corner from the finish, where you can end the day with a well-deserved lunch or dinner. Recommended in Workum is the well-known Jopie Huisman Museum or Museum Warkums Erfskip, located in the historic weigh house of the town.
