The village is one of the main places where Frisian handball is played. The annual Freulepartij handball tournament for boys aged 14 to 16 held here is named after Freule de Vos van Steenwijk, the woman who founded and funded the event. The tournament attracts thousands of handball enthusiasts to Wommels every year. At Junction 20 you stray off the route briefly to visit a bird-watching hide, where you may see some of the many meadow birds that live in this area. The route leads you across meadows and through the Skrok nature reserve. Along the way you pass the beautiful Aylvapoldermolen smock mill. The original mill burnt to the ground in 1959. In 2000, the Vijfhuistermill smock mill from in Hallum was rebuilt on this site. When you arrive back in Wommels, take some time to discover this charming little village.
