Easterein Roaming Route

(10.7 km)

Easterein is a picturesque village of varied architecture that has been declared a protected townscape. The monumental church in the centre of the village is set in a partially moated churchyard. There are many cheese warehouses in the village. In the gallery of the former Reformed Church in Easterein there is a tea room.

Between the villages of Easterein and Rien, near the hamlet of Meilahuizen, there is a lovely meditation and retreat centre known as Het Kleine Paradijs, which means ‘little paradise’. The tea garden is open in the summer. The village of Rien was once famous for its horse fair and harness races were held here. The tradition lives on in the name of one of the roads: De Draversdyk means ‘harness racing dike’.

The village of Lytsewierrum is situated on the edge of the former Middelzee estuary. You can still see how the sea altered the landscape. The country road across the reclaimed land at Lytsewierrum leads through farmland that once belonged to the Bokmastate estate. Until a few years ago, it was traditional for the tenant farmers who worked the land to supply the owner of the estate with 75 plovers’ eggs each spring.

Just after the hamlet of Greate Wierrum you come onto Sânleansterdyk road. As you make your way towards the village of Reahûs, on your right you will see the reclaimed land at Lytsewierrum and on the left the former Middelzee estuary. Reahûs is a small mound village with a well-preserved Late Gothic church that hosts art exhibitions in the summer.
