Kuiertocht Molkwerum - Stavoren

(5.8 km)

Formerly, Molkwerum was nicknamed 'the Frisian maze'. Once, the town was twice as large and must have looked like a Frisian version of Giethoorn due to a system of canals and moats.

This walk through the meadows takes you from Molkwerum to the endpoint in Stavoren.

A "kuiertocht" is a short walking route. So, it probably won't surprise you that in Frisian, "wandelen" translates to "kuierje". You can easily combine a leisurely stroll with an activity in the area, or choose to embark on another leisurely stroll.

Note: this route takes you from Koudum-Molkwerum station to Stavoren station. Once you walk over the characteristic bridge into Stavoren, keep right towards the station. Take the train back to Molkwerum or stay a little longer in the beautiful harbor town of Stavoren.

Stavoren (Starum)

Stavoren (or Starum as we say in Friesland) is very much the main city of the IJsselmeer, being enclosed by the lake on three sides. It is also the oldest city of Friesland, founded around 300 BC at a waterway, and gaining city rights in the 11th century.

11Fountains Stavoren

The sea gives, the sea takes. Stavoren, once a rich Hanseatic city, has much to say on this subject. Floods, maritime trade wars, a port that silted up: the city fell into poverty several times.
