On December 22, 1943, the B-24 Liberator B-24J crashed at Mirns in the village cemetery. The Liberator was intercepted en route by a German Messerschmitt fighter aircraft. The pilot tried to make an emergency landing at Mirns, but the attempt failed and the aircraft overturned in the cemetery.

Trees, tombstones and the belfry were completely destroyed. Three of the ten crew members survived the disaster. The seven crew members who died in an accident were first buried in the general cemetery in Bakhuizen. Later, the seven crew members were reburied in America and one in the American cemetery in Margraten.
