Walkingroute Ruterpolder IJlst

(3.6 km)

A beautiful 3.5 km route through the farmland surrounding the Frisian town of IJlst.

The Ruterpolder is located southwest of the Eleven Cities town of IJlst. You can enter the polder at two points. It's best to start at the chimney of Nooitgedacht and walk along the Eegracht with its beautiful gardens. Then, follow the route clockwise and enjoy the best view of the town from the polder. The route is not marked, but signs indicate both entrances to the polder. Before returning to the starting point, you'll need to cross the ditch using a self-service ferry!

Please note: from March 15th to June 14th, the Ruterpolder path is closed due to the bird breeding season. Also, it's important to know that dogs are not allowed in the Ruterpolder!

Sights on this route

Nooitgedagt chimney

The silhouette of IJlst would not be the same without the old factory chimney, on which the letters of the Nooitgedagt name can be read from top to bottom.

Waterside Gardens

Unique and characteristic to IJlst are the waterside gardens on each side of the Ee.

House Messingklopper

The Messingklopper was presumably built in 1669. Adorning the facade is a splendid family crest with that year, but the building may be of an earlier date.

St Maurice Church in IJlst

The St Maurice church we see in IJlst today was designed by the architect J. Ankringa and built in 1830. The beautifully carved wooden pulpit made in 1672 was originally installed in the previous church on this site, as was the baptismal screen.
