Akkrum - Nij Beets | Koningspad XL Hiking Trail Network: Section 8
From the village of Akkrum, you walk along the banks of the De Boarn river to the little village of Aldeboarn. Thanks to the efforts of local farmers, the area attracts large numbers of meadow birds. Past the village of Aldeboarn, you walk along one of the oldest side channels of the river, the straight Nije Boarn waterway, which was dug to transport turf from the town of Gorredijk to the village of Aldeboarn. Further on, you rejoin the course of the De Boarn river and eventually arrive at the Nieuwe Vaart and Polderhoofdkanaal canals. These waterways were also dug to transport turf. Today they are part of the Turf Boating Route.
