This 39-kilometre cycling tour through the southeast corner of Friesland takes you back to the last two decades of the 19th century. Just prior to this there was an economic crisis in rural areas. This was partly due to the growing use of American wheat. At the same time coal was increasingly replacing peat as a fuel. Peat cutters and agricultural workers were hard hit financially. And they were already among the poorest in the land.
