De Hoeve Roaming Route
De Hoeve is a small village with just under 400 inhabitants. Isolated farms were built on the tops of rolling heathland from the 16th century onwards. But it wasn’t until the 19th and 20th centuries that more and more of the untilled land was cultivated. and De Hoeve gradually became village.
The undulation in the landscape is still clearly visible, especially when cycling along Jokweg road and Oude Jokweg road. Jokweg road was originally an ancient track that led over a sand ridge to Friesland. The name of the road means that a cart pulled by a pair of yoked (‘juk’) oxen could travel along it.
