Balk is in the municipality of De Fryske Marren, between Harich and Wijckel, and has about 4,000 residents. The Luts canal flows through the village. Balk can thank its existence to the trade between Wijckel and Harich that took place on a beam over the Luts. It became increasingly busy at the place where the path crossed the water via a beam. The town of Balk has stood there since its beginning in around 1486.The beam was later replaced by a bridge.

    On the water and in the forest

    Balk is a lively village. The Lutskedagen take place during the summer months. These charming fairs take place along the Luts in the village centre. Balk’s festival week also takes place in August and includes a funfair. The gondola tour is the highlight and takes place on the last Thursday of August. This is a real spectacle on the Luts that attracts thousands of visitors. During the winter, the Berenburg Cup is sailed on the Slotermeer from Balk. This Berenburg Cup travels over the Slotermeer and starts in Balk.

    The Teernstrabrug and the Ossebrug run from 1 May through 1 October from 9:00 am to noon and from 1:00 pm to 4:15 pm. It is then run by volunteers from 5:15 pm until 7:00 pm.
