Frisian Water Line I
The Frisian Water Line was built shortly after 1580 and stretched from the Zuiderzee inlet in the west to the Groningen Water Line in the east.
During the Eighty Years’ War with Spain and a century later when the Prince-Bishop of Münster, also known as ‘Bombing Bernhard’, attempted to invade Groningen, the land here was flooded. The only way to get to Leeuwarden was to pass through the strategically located forts. So the capital of Friesland was protected.

This cycling route takes you past places along the east section of the Frisian Water Line where the forts stood. You learn more about the Sterrenschans star fort (Bakkeveen star sconce) near the village of Bakkeveen, Frieschepalen fort (Sconce of Frieschepalen), the Zwartendijk star fort (Zwartendijkster sconce) and the Breebergschans fort (Breeberg sconce). As an extra, you also get to see the Landweer medieval earth fortification near the hamlet of Allardsoog. If you look closely, most of the fortifications can still be seen in the landscape.

Kerk Siegerswoude
De huidige kerk is een wederopbouwkerk uit 1949. Voorheen stond er een kerk welke rond 1220 moet zijn gebouwd en afgebroken is in 1909. Van de kloostermoppen van de oude kerk is een baarhuisje gebouwd.

Directions
- Je start in het dorp Bakkeveen bij knooppunt 39 en je gaat op pad naar knoopunt 41, onderweg stap je af bij de Sterrenschans.
- Als je 41 bereikt hebt, ga je door naar de knooppunten 87 - 10, onderweg passeer je de dorpen Siegerswoude en Frieschepalen.
- Je fietst even door naar de Schans van Frieschepalen en keert daarna terug naar 10.
- Van daaruit naar knooppunt 12 - 79 en stap daarna even af bij de Waskmar.
- Hierna door naar knooppunt 82 - 50 - 11, bij nummer 11 vind je de Landweer bij Allardsoog.
- Je steekt de N979 over op weg naar Drenthe en neemt een kijkje bij de mooie Zwartendijksterschans bij het dorp Eén-West.
- Terug naar Friesland om de knooppunten 95 - 98 - 99 - 37 te volgen.
- Je komt hierna langs de voormalige Breebergschans.
- Via knooppunt 21 - 15 kom je weer terug in Bakkeveen bij het startpunt van de route.
