Akkrum is located between Heerenveen and Leeuwarden, directly along the railway and the A32 motorway. Nowhere is the view disturbed by industry or urban hustle and bustle. Instead, there are vast meadows, flowering verges, traditional farms and beautiful natural areas. Akkrum is a charming and lively village in the middle of Friesland. Akkrum is located at the beginning of the Turfroute and has ideal water sports opportunities for water sports enthusiasts. Akkrum has lovely sights and other tourist attractions. When entering Akkrum via the Ljouwerterdyk, attention is immediately drawn to the historic Coopersburg building. Coopersburg was built around 1900 and owes its name to Folkert Harmen Kuipers. Folkert Harmen Kuipers emigrated to the United States at the age of 22 and became a successful businessman. During one of his annual visits to his parents, he was struck by the poverty among the Akkrum residents, which inspired him to set up a foundation. The purpose of this foundation was to provide shelter and care to the poverty stricken. Because Kuipers had changed his name to Cooper in the United States, the building was named Coopersburg
