Greidhoek cycling route

This route passes by the Skrins birdwatching shelter. There, you’ll find a very special book...

Between junctions 83 and 48, you will be deviating from the standard route, and following the road known as Monsamabuorren to the birdwatching shelter at Skrins. Here you’ll find a unique wooden book, so why not pause for a while and take a fresh new look at your surroundings... Back on your bike and arriving in Easterlittens, continue to junction 91. From there, you follow the standard cycling route again.

Skrins Meadow Bird Reserve

The Skrins meadow bird reserve between the villages of Wommels and Oosterlittens is a popular foraging and roosting spot for many birds. In the spring, the flower-filled grasslands are perfect for nesting.

The chimney of the former factory serves as a unique landmark for the terp village. Oosterlittens is a diligent and active village. For several years now, it has also been hosting the Open Frisian Championship in 'Jeu de Pelote.

Wommels

Wommels is a mound village located in the heart of the Greidhoek. Every year, the Freulepartij is played in Wommels, which is a highlight on the village's calendar.

Museum It Tsiispakhûs

The village of Wommels has a rich history in the field of butter-but even more so in the cheese trade. The many still clearly recognisable cheese merchant houses in Wommels are a reminder of that time, which lasted from ca. 1880 to 1910.

Jacobikerk Church

The Jacobikerk church stands on the terp in the village of Wommels. The single-nave church built in the 13th century was restored after a fire in around 1508. In the three-tier tower built in 1862 there are two bells. One was cast by Geert van Wou in 1494

The Martinikerk Easterein

The Martinikerk is a church built in the 14th century, located on a moated elevation. In the middle of the 11th century, a tuffstone predecessor was built. The church hall is available for rent. You can also book a guided tour.

  • Time needed: around 4 hours (including a visit to the birdwatching shelter, but without stopping for refreshments)
  • Start and direction: The route starts in the centre of Sneek, at the Prins Hendrikkade, near the Koninginnebrug bridge.
  • Public transport or parking: The route starts close to Sneek train station. There, you can rent a bike (OV-fiets). There is also a car park in the vicinity.
